This sequence is based on the epic musical interlude from Act 3 Scene 3 of Richard Wagner’s opera, Lohengrin.

It’s a bit hard for me to believe that this is the final sequence of the year. I am very proud to have put out 52 sequences this year, and hope that at least one of them has introduced you to some new music, helped you grow as a musician, helped you enjoy practicing a bit more. I plan on continuing to make sequences, but will not have a formal release structure like 2019. I am hoping a bit of freedom will keep me interested, keep my stress low, and make the content creation more fun.
Gathering of the Armies from Lohengrin
I was late to the orchestral music party. When I get to Northwestern as a 21 year old, I had just started purposefully listening to orchestral music. As a result, the first time I was introduced to this music was through trombone choir.
Luckily for me, the Northwestern trombone studio was INCREDIBLE, and our trombone choir could play basically anything. Our fearless leader, Pete Ellefson, programmed loads of great music and even organized a trip for us to play at ATW (video below).
Jay Friedman‘s arrangement of “The Gathering of the Armies from Lohengrin” was one of my favorite pieces we played.
Background
This melody this sequence is based on appears in Act 3 Scene 3, just after Elsa foolishly asks Lohengrin his identity. The scene opens at dawn, with a red sky and the music sounding from a distance.
His identity revealed to all, Lohengrin must return to Monsalvat where the Knights of the Grail live.
Sequence
Strive for a bold, energized sound, like a fleet of horns blaring in the distance. Bound through each bar of music like a fearless cavalry charge, and sustain your energy through to the release of the final note.
I thought this would be a fitting final sequence of my GetFluent2019 project because it is a call to arms.
