This sequence is based on the melody that opens Baby Beluga, by Raffi.
Sometimes big stars reach a level of fame so high that the public begins to refer to them by only one name. Beyonce, JLo, Sting, Madonna, Cher, Bono, Bjork, Prince, Shakira…..and Raffi.
I know you might not think Raffi fits in that group, but his spot is well deserved. With a 40+ year career creating over 30 albums, 16 books, and multiple movies, Raffi has made a remarkable impact on millions of people. For many, his music was the soundtrack of childhood.
Raffi Cavoukian was born in Cairo, Egypt and moved with his family to Ontario, Canada when he was about 10 years old. Raffi played folk music in cafe’s all over Canada before being invited to sing for a Toronto public school. He was an immediate success, launching a career entertaining children.
Decades later, Raffi has been described by the Washington Post and the Toronto Star as “the most popular children’s entertainer in the English-speaking world” and “Canada’s all-time children’s champion.”
In addition to his musical impact, Raffi has devoted himself to his Child Honouring Foundation, which works to realize his vision for creating a humane and sustainable world by addressing the universal needs of children. He is a big advocate of a “commercial free” childhood, and consistently refused all commercial endorsement offers.
Baby Beluga is the title track off of his 6th album, released in 1980. It tells the story of a little white whale on the go, swimming wild and free.
The sequence is based on Baby Beluga’s opening lick. It’s a jolly little swinging melody that starts on the 3rd of the scale, walks down to the tonic, then bounces down to the 5th before happily coming back up.
Strive to make a sound fit for a giant whale, swimming freely in the ocean. Be sure to listen to the original to hear the lighthearted swinging style.
