Nino Rota – Love Theme from The Godfather Sequence

This sequence is based on the iconic theme from the Godfather Trilogy, composed by Nino Rota.

Greatest Movies of All Time

IMDB – 1, USA today – 1, Hollywood Reporter – 1, Ranker – 1, Empire – 1, AFI – 3, and I could go on and on.

Aside from coming in at number one on almost every internet list of great movies, The Godfather is way up in the top 5 of MY favorite movies of all time. I liked it so much that I read the original book by Mario Puzo. Spoiler alert: It’s AWESOME.

The movie takes Puzo’s story and brings it to life with the help of legendary actors, masterfully shot by director Francis Ford Coppola. Everything is enhanced by Nino Rota’s score, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Rota’s score for Godfather Part II won the academy award. If you haven’t seen it, stop reading this post, and make a plan to watch it ASAP.

I love everything about this movie. Don Corleone, guided by an old code of honor, must make tough decisions to take care of his family. His son, Michael Corleone, rises up to lead the family in a time of need, growing into a ruthless Don that nobody would dare cross. I love the glimpse into an old world, full of corruption and beauty.

Speak Softly Love

I was born in 1988, so I was introduced to this movie sometime in the early 2000’s by my Dad. Since I was not alive in the 70’s when these movies came out, I had no idea this Godfather theme was turned into a romantic, easy listening pop song. It turns out this song was used as diegetic music in Godfather III, but who remembers Godfather III?

Williams does a great job injecting this melody with all of the drama that the Godfather movies are famous for. Use his vocal lyricism as inspiration for your instrumental version!

Sequence

The original theme uses bowed strings, plucked mandolin, oboe, accordion, and vibraphone to give the song an unmistakably Italian sound.

Play this winding minor tune in a nostalgic singing style, as if you are part of an old Italian family that has fond memories of the old days.

Experiment with different phrase shapes until you find the one that is so convincing, it is like an offer they can’t refuse. Lastly, whatever you do, never take sides against the family……
