I just discovered this awesome tone poem by Samuel Barber called Music for a Scene from Shelley. It is based on Percy Bysshe Shelley‘s Prometheus Unbound, in which Panthea prompts her sister Asia (goddess of love) to hear “voices in the air”, seeking Asia’s sympathy and love. Not bad for some source material.
This sequence comes from the first string climax and is almost immediately echoed in an epic trumpet call about a third of the way in.
Happy Practicing!
