This sequence is based on a winding chromatic motive in the Infernal Dance from Igor Stravinsky‘s ballet, The Firebird.
I want to devote this sequence to my friends at ArtHaus who will be bringing Stravinsky’s Firebird to Burning Man this week. I wish I could be there with you all!
This is a special ballet because it launched the relationship between Stravinsky and Diaghilev of the Ballet Russes which eventually brought about Petrushka and The Rite of Spring.
This dance is full of excitement and energy, so keep the tempo steady but strive to make a forward leaning phrase. Ping the front of each note to represent the accents and choose your note length! Most recordings have a bit of space between the notes, but the specifics vary. Make a choice before you begin and stick to it. Try a different style on the next go.
This sequence is fantastic for working on your intervals, articulations, and slide technique. It takes me a few keys before I can start really internalize the intervals and hear this lick like a melody.
